Waymo is expanding its paid autonomous ride-hailing service to Denver, San Diego and Tampa, Florida, increasing its presence in the U.S. driverless transportation market. Amazon-backed Zoox is also preparing to begin testing in Houston and San Diego, while Tesla is expected to provide more details this week about its driverless Cybercab and Robotaxi plans.

Waymo is expanding its commercial driverless ride hailing operations to Denver, San Diego and Tampa, bringing paid autonomous rides to three additional U.S. cities.

The expansion adds to the growing competition among companies seeking to establish autonomous vehicles as a commercial transportation service. Waymo already operates paid driverless rides in several U.S. markets, and the latest move further broadens its operating footprint.

The announcement comes as Amazon backed Zoox prepares to enter additional markets. The autonomous vehicle company said it plans to begin testing in Houston and San Diego this month, with human supervisors onboard during the testing phase.

The developments highlight the different stages at which major companies are approaching autonomous ride hailing. Waymo is expanding an existing paid driverless service, while Zoox is continuing supervised testing as it develops its commercial operations.

Meanwhile, Tesla is expected to provide additional information this week about its plans for the Cybercab and Robotaxi, its proposed driverless ride hailing service.

The competing announcements come as automakers and technology companies increase investment in autonomous driving and seek to determine whether driverless transportation can become a scalable commercial business.

For investors, the expansion of paid services and testing programs provides another indication that autonomous ride hailing is moving from development toward broader commercial deployment. However, the companies remain at different stages, and the pace at which each can expand will depend on testing, regulatory requirements, technology performance and the ability to operate safely at scale.

The growing activity also sets the stage for increased competition among Waymo, Zoox and Tesla as each seeks a position in what could become a significant segment of the transportation market.
