U.S. stock futures pointed to a mixed open on Monday, with Nasdaq and S&P 500 futures rising as technology shares gained following a reported strong long-term revenue outlook from artificial intelligence company Anthropic. Investors were also weighing shifting expectations for Federal Reserve policy and persistent concerns over higher oil prices linked to the Iran conflict.
U.S. stock futures were mixed early Monday, with technology stocks providing support as investors assessed the outlook for artificial intelligence spending and the path of U.S. interest rates.
At 7:32 a.m. ET, Dow E-minis were down 90 points, or 0.17%, while S&P 500 E-minis rose 10.5 points, or 0.13%. Nasdaq 100 E-minis gained 156.75 points, or 0.52%.
The move followed a Reuters report that Anthropic, which is preparing for an initial public offering, is forecasting revenue of roughly $190 billion to $200 billion in 2028.
Amazon shares rose 1.2% in premarket trading, while Alphabet gained 0.6%. Chipmakers also advanced, with Micron Technology up 3% and Broadcom 1.1%.
Nvidia rose 0.6% following a report that the chipmaker had reduced plans to support a proposed OpenAI data-center project in Ohio. Investors are also preparing for Nvidia's quarterly results next week, which could provide further clues about the durability of the AI-driven market rally.
The broader market is also being influenced by changing expectations for Federal Reserve policy. Softer inflation data and an unexpected decline in retail sales have reduced expectations for a September rate increase. Traders were pricing in a nearly 31% probability of a 25-basis-point rate hike at the meeting, sharply below the roughly even odds of a hike or hold a week earlier.
However, higher oil prices stemming from the Iran conflict remain a potential source of inflation pressure. The uncertainty has kept attention focused on incoming economic data as investors assess the central bank's next moves.
The earnings season is also entering its later stages, with Walmart and Home Depot among the major companies scheduled to report this week. Of the 453 S&P 500 companies that had reported earnings, 84.8% had exceeded analysts' estimates, according to LSEG IBES data.
Elsewhere, U.S.-listed shares of Vista Energy rose 5.7% after Peter Thiel disclosed a 1% stake in the Latin American oil company.
