Google Cloud has launched Gemini Enterprise for Legal, a specialised AI offering designed to help law firms and corporate legal departments automate legal workflows while maintaining security and data controls. The service is initially available in preview and is being developed with several major law firms.
Google Cloud has expanded its Gemini Enterprise artificial intelligence platform with a new offering designed specifically for law firms and legal departments, as technology companies compete for a growing share of the legal industry's AI market.
The company announced Gemini Enterprise for Legal on Tuesday, describing it as a purpose-built AI solution for legal work. The platform includes specialised skills, AI agents and connections to legal technology systems that can be used for tasks including contract review, legal research, regulatory monitoring and other legal workflows.
Google said the service is designed around requirements specific to legal work, including confidentiality, access controls and the protection of sensitive client information. The platform can connect with existing legal systems while preserving permissions and access controls.
The offering also connects with technology platforms used by legal professionals, including systems from Thomson Reuters, Harvey, LexisNexis, Everlaw and other providers, according to Google.
Several major law firms are already working with Google on the product. Google identified Cleary Gottlieb, Freshfields, Weil and Williams & Connolly among the firms collaborating on Gemini Enterprise for Legal.
The launch comes as law firms increasingly adopt generative AI for activities such as legal research, drafting and business operations. Reuters reported that technology companies including Anthropic and Thomson Reuters are also expanding their AI offerings for the legal industry.
Google Cloud has become one of Alphabet's fastest-growing businesses, according to Reuters. Alphabet launched Gemini Enterprise for business customers in October as it sought to expand its AI services among corporate clients.
The legal sector has consequently emerged as an important market for AI companies seeking to move beyond general-purpose consumer applications and into specialised enterprise services.
Google said Gemini Enterprise for Legal is initially available in preview, with the company planning additional industry-specific solutions as it expands the Gemini Enterprise platform.
The launch gives Google another entry point into the legal technology market, where established legal-information providers and newer AI companies are competing to provide tools capable of handling increasingly complex professional workflows.
