Nigerian stocks rebounded on Thursday, with the NGX All Share Index rising 0.20% to 239,156.09 points and market capitalisation climbing to N154.44 trillion.

The Nigerian stock market recovered on Thursday, August 27, 2026, as buying interest in several major stocks helped the Nigerian Exchange Limited All-Share Index (NGX ASI) regain some of the ground lost in the previous session.

The NGX ASI rose by 473.17 points, or approximately 0.20 per cent, to close at 239,156.09 points, compared with 238,682.92 points recorded on Wednesday. The rebound came after the market had fallen by 402.25 points in the previous session.

Market capitalisation also increased to N154.44 trillion from N154.14 trillion on Wednesday. Based on the figures provided, this represents an increase of about N302.43 billion.

Trading activity, however, was lower in terms of volume and number of transactions. A total of 499.96 million shares were traded in 40,323 deals, with the transactions valued at N35.15 billion. This compares with more than 733.25 million shares traded in 49,116 deals on Wednesday, indicating a decline in trading volume and deal count as the market recovered.

Omatek led the gainers’ chart, rising 9.60 per cent from N1.25 to N1.37 per share. Cornerstone Insurance followed with a 9.18 per cent gain, moving from N4.90 to N5.35.

Mansard gained 9.09 per cent to close at N12.00, while Abbey Mortgage Bank rose 6.25 per cent to N8.50.

First HoldCo also recorded a notable recovery, gaining 4.65 per cent to N135.00 from N129.00 in the previous session. The stock had been among the companies under selling pressure earlier in the week, making Thursday’s advance particularly significant within the day's trading.

Despite the broader market recovery, several stocks recorded sharp declines.

Fidson Healthcare led the decliners, falling 9.98 per cent from N84.20 to N75.80 per share. Learn Africa declined 9.84 per cent to N8.70, while International Energy Insurance also fell 9.84 per cent to N2.84.

DAAR Communications declined 8.61 per cent to N1.38, while Legend Internet fell 8.43 per cent to N3.80 per share.

The presence of substantial declines among individual stocks shows that Thursday's positive index performance did not represent a uniform recovery across the market.

Banking stocks dominated trading activity during the session. Zenith Bank recorded the highest volume, with 69.95 million shares traded at a value of N8.20 billion. Access Holdings followed with 45.37 million shares worth N1.29 billion, while Guaranty Trust Holding Company recorded 37.47 million shares valued at N4.81 billion.

Sterling Financial Holdings Company traded 37.21 million shares worth N282.95 million, while WAPIC Insurance recorded 24.30 million shares valued at N49.37 million.

The five most actively traded stocks accounted for approximately 214.43 million shares, representing about 42.9 per cent of the total market volume for the session. Their combined transaction value was approximately N14.63 billion, or about 41.6 per cent of the day's total equity value.

Thursday's performance suggests that investors returned to selected equities following the sell off that pushed the market lower on Wednesday. The gains in First HoldCo, alongside advances in several insurance and financial stocks, contributed to the recovery in the benchmark index.

However, the lower trading volume and number of deals compared with Wednesday indicate that the rebound occurred alongside more moderate overall trading activity.

The market therefore ended Thursday on a firmer footing, with the NGX All-Share Index closing at 239,156.09 points and equity market capitalisation at N154.44 trillion. While the recovery reversed the previous day's decline, the mixed performance among individual stocks showed that investor sentiment remained selective.
